Natural and alternative treatments:
Every person suffering with Psoriasis will have individual problem areas to treat, hence individualised treatment is essential.
Given the key role stress or emotional trauma often plays in the onset of psoriasis, it is vital that a patient chooses a complementary treatment that will help relieve stress, such as hypnosis, homeopathy, acupuncture, or healing. Nutrition and detoxification also play a very important part in the treatment of psoriasis.
HYPNOTHERAPY
Some hypnotherapists and psychotherapists claim to have had considerable success using hypnotherapy in treating psoriasis. They believe that the condition can very often be a reflection of repressed emotions. During the course of the initial consultation, a thorough case history would be taken and treatment would be geared to the patient’s individual requirements.
HOMEOPATHY
Treatment for psoriasis includes taking a case history, which lasts about an hour and from which the practitioner decides on the homeopathic remedy that is best suited to the individual patient. Nutritional advice is also given and natural nutritional supplements such as probiotics and essential fatty acids may be recommended. Depending on the severity of the case, the condition may be cleared in as little as three months. The practitioner may then continue to prescribe nutritional supplements so that patients can help themselves at home.
Some homeopaths report an 80 percent improvement in psoriasis cases, while other cases do not respond at all. If homeopathy is to work for you, you should expect in the region of five sessions to get results.
ACUPUNCTURE
In acupuncture, diagnosis and therapy are aimed at identifying any imbalance in the body’s energy flow and correcting it by inserting needles at appropriate points. For psoriasis, needles would be inserted not only on the meridians dealing with the skin but also on those governing the underlying causes of the condition – stress, anxiety, or allergies, for example.
NUTRITIONAL THERAPY
Psoriasis is characterized by increased cell proliferation and there are certain foods (containing the toxic metabolites collectively known as polyamines) that exacerbate the condition. Such foods include alcohol, all sugars, animal fats (including dairy products), meats, and glutens (wheat, oats, barley) and should be reduced or avoided altogether. An increase in oil fish has been shown to help the condition, as have the supplements of flaxseed oil, selenium, and zinc.
